Our History

The Barcelona Women’s Network (BWN) was founded in 1998 by a group of international women brought together through a shared desire for friendship, community, and meaningful involvement in Barcelona. What began in 1997 as a small group of women volunteering together for a U.S. Consulate event quickly evolved into a growing network of women meeting in homes and cafés across the city. Inspired by a successful charity gala and a common interest in learning more about their adopted home, the women established BWN as an inclusive community open to women of all nationalities.

From its earliest days, BWN combined social connection with cultural discovery and community service. Members organised coffee mornings, excursions, educational events, and fundraising initiatives while building lasting friendships and helping newcomers feel at home in Barcelona. One of the organisation’s first major projects was the publication of the "Gateway to Barcelona" guide, created to help international residents navigate life in the city.

As membership grew rapidly, so did BWN’s impact. By 1999, the organisation had become an established part of Barcelona’s international community, hosting charitable events, cultural programmes, and educational activities while supporting local causes. More than 25 years later, BWN continues to bring together women from around the world, fostering friendship, inclusion, personal growth, and community engagement in Barcelona.
