Launching into a new year is a perfect time to reflect on some highlights of the year past. With so much to draw upon, picking favourites was a daunting task and can still be considered up for some debate. However, to draw the line under 2019 somewhere, here is a roundup of our best bits, we look forward to discovering many more in the year ahead!
Our dinner club organiser selected Llamber as her stand-out hit of the past year’s dinner club. The food and the service combined for a perfect evening of everything you could want in a restaurant. A special mention also goes out to Swad for incredible Indian food—something of a rarity in Catalonia—and much appreciated by our diners.
The lunch club particularly enjoyed the food at Casa Lolea. It serves classic tapas and typical Spanish cuisine prepared to flavourful and aesthetic perfection.
What could be better than an outing to a Cava winery with tasting? Combining it with a visit to a local chocolate factory. Our December visit to Freixenet and Simon Coll was a genius arrangement from our expert organiser, and a superb way to spend a day out in the Penedés hills near Barcelona.
Within the city limits, a walking tour of Gràcia in June with a fantastic guide, followed by a descent into the only civil war air raid shelter open to visitors was a fascinating day discovering hidden gems that easily warrants a mention here.
Another popular trip out of town was the February visit to Can Papiol in Vilanova i La Geltriu. An easy train ride from Barcelona, the Papiol family’s grand house allowed us to dive into local history with its careful and atmospheric restoration.
The initial dance class at Baila Barcelona was pure fun. Skill levels in the art of Latin Dance were very much the secondary objective to professional level enjoyment. We’ll be back.
Our class with Life Drawing Barcelona at the Barcelona Art Club was a real hit. We went out of curiosity, with a bit of a wink and a nudge, but all surprised ourselves with how the short poses class truly improved our draftsmanship; we left inspired.
A continually popular activity among members is the Heart Pillow Project, for which we get together to make heart-shaped pillows for women who have recently undergone mastectomies. We donate them to the hospital each month with the aim of covering demand for them. It is a fun activity for an excellent cause.
